Encaustic Assemblage Workshop | December 8-9

Encaustic Assemblage Workshop | December 8-9

Description

as·sem·blage | \ə-ˈsem-blij | A group of things collected…a sculptural technique of organizing into a unified whole a group of unrelated and often fragmented or discarded objects…scraps, junk, odds and ends.

Join visual artist Candace Law on Friday and Saturday, December 8-9 for a two-day encaustic assemblage workshop. It will focus on an exploration of the 3-dimensional technique of using found objects with collage, and how encaustic can enhance creating assemblages. Some experience working with encaustic would be helpful.

Saturday will start off by walking through the “Dream Journals” exhibition of assemblage pieces by artist Larry Zdeb in our Gallery to look at his amazing work and consider how he creates them. Along with demonstrations, we’ll review some basic tools and simple mechanical ways to attach objects to panels and other surfaces. Then we’ll work through a couple of small projects as we incorporate encaustic into our work. As always, you’ll have ample individual work time.

The equipment, supplies, and some materials needed for this workshop are provided. However, you will want to bring your own found objects, various small items, collage papers or ephemera to incorporate into your artwork.

This workshop is not offered very often, so grab this opportunity while you can. And sign up early to get the early-bird price! The cost is just $295 until November 30 or $345 for later registrations.

Encaustic on Paper at GPAA

Encaustic on Paper at GPAA

Description

Join visual artist Candace Law at the War Memorial on Saturday, October 28 from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm for an encaustic on paper workshop sponsored by the Grosse Pointe Artists Association. Using paper as a surface for creating is a time-honored tradition, and it can work beautifully with the ancient art of encaustic.

New to encaustic, or just want to brush up on your skills? In either case, this class will fit your needs. There will be demos, as well as plenty of one-on-one time for help and questions.

The workshop will include:

  • A review of the equipment, materials typically used, and basic safety tips
  • Experimenting with paint on heavy paper
  • Learning how to achieve smooth and textured surfaces
  • Using additional tools to add marks and incise lines

All equipment, paints, brushes and most materials are supplied by the instructor. Heavy paper, watercolor or Bristol board, approximately 9×12, will be provided, along with some additional items to use for mark-making or embedding.

Students are welcome to bring a few items they might like to work with, such as decorative papers, found objects or other small ephemera. Apron or studio clothes are suggested. Feel free to bring along images to use as references.

Encaustic UpSized | Workshop | August 26

“Still Running With Scissors” (shown) was a 48″ x 30″ commissioned work.

Description

Join visual artist Candace Law in the studio on Saturday, August 26 from 10 am to 4 pm to explore upsizing encaustic paintings. Space is limited, so register early—you won’t want to miss out.

“I’m often looking for ways to challenge myself, or mix up my work with something less common. One way to do that? Go LARGER! It’s a perfect way to push your skills and make you think a little differently about what you want to say in your work and how you achieve it. So I’m offering this workshop where we will try our hand (and brush) on panels that are larger than what I typically offer.”

In this workshop we will:

  • Do a brief review of working with wax—even I need this as a warmup
  • Discuss the type of supports, materials, and tools that aid in larger paintings
  • Work on one larger cradled wood panel, either 16 x 20 or 18 x 24

As always, there will be demonstrations and group discussion, as well as individual work time and one-on-one time with Candace to fill out the day.

The equipment, materials and most supplies for the workshop are provided. Feel free to bring any materials (found objects, papers or other items) you might like to incorporate into your artwork.

Mark-Making with Encaustic | Workshop

Mark-Making with Encaustic | Workshop

Description

Join visual artist Candace Law in the studio on Saturday, June 24 from 10 am to 4 pm to explore the number of ways we can incorporate marks in our encaustic paintings. Space is limited, so you won’t want to miss out.

One of my absolute favorite things to do on any piece I’m painting is to make marks of some kind. Artist Paul Klee once said “A line is a dot that went for a walk”. I’ve never met a line I didn’t like, and dots or scribbles are just as interesting, adding layers and greater depth to the surface of your artwork.

We’ll talk about some of the specific materials that pair well with wax. Ever tried incising or inlays? This is your chance to spend a day experimenting and opening up your imagination. To add to the fun, we’ll pull out a selection of pigment sticks to enhance our marks or create subtle glazes.

As always, there will be demonstrations and group discussion, as well as individual work time and one-on-one time with me will fill out the day.

The equipment, materials and most supplies for the workshop are provided. Feel free to bring any materials (found objects, papers or other small items) you might like to incorporate into your artwork. You’ll be working with small to medium-sized panels (up to 9” x 12”) so you can complete at least one piece by the end of the day.

Sign up early and get the early-bird price! The cost is just $140 until June 9 or $165 for later registrations.

Shellac Burn With Encaustic

Shellac Burn With Encaustic

Description

Join visual artist Candace Law on Saturday, August 27 from 10 am to 4 pm for a workshop you won’t want to miss! Let’s have some hot fun and create with shellac and wax.

If you’ve never tried it, this is a great time to see the really lovely effects this technique can produce on your encaustic artwork.

The main attraction of the day will be shellac in various colors—even custom ones. We’ll start in the classroom and prepare a few of our panels with medium and layers of paint, then we’ll move outside to see and explore the magic of this material.

I will also talk about and demonstrate other materials that can be burned as part of your encaustic creation. You’ll have a chance to try burning tar paper, wood glue, and even gesso.

As an added bonus, I will talk about and demonstrate shou sugi ban, a Japanese process of burning wood to preserve it and give it an exquisite finish. Use it to give a unique look to the cradled edges of a wood panel. You won’t want to miss this!

New to encaustic, or been away from it for awhile? This is a great time to give it a try, or come and remind yourself just how wonderful and versatile this medium is. There will be ample time for learning the basics and warming up.

As always, the equipment and most materials are provided. Demonstrations and group discussion, as well as individual work time and one-on-one time with the instructor will fill out the day.

Class size is limited, so sign up early!

With the CDC’s COVID risk for Oakland County again at a “High” level, we ask that you wear a face mask, especially during the demonstrations and group discussions. Hand sanitizer is available for you to use, too.

Photos in Wax Workshop

Photos in Wax Workshop

Description

Join visual artist Candace Law on Friday and Saturday, May 20-21 from 10 am to 4 pm each day in a workshop you won’t want to miss! You’ll be hands-on, working with different ways to use photo images you’ve taken and creatively pair them with Encaustic. How fun is that! The cost is just $295, and all materials are included.

You will learn several processes that include:

  • transferring images onto a waxed surface
  • embedding images printed on thin papers
  • hand-coloring photos using pan pastels or pigment sticks
  • doing a wax pour
  • and other cool things

This will be an exploration of techniques many artists use to bring photographic images into their creative work, and it is going to be a lot of fun. So dig out your phone or camera, go through some old photo prints, and sign up early; there are a limited number of spots available. You will be covering a lot of ground to push and enhance your photo/wax/mixed media work, so some basic experience with encaustic will be helpful.

Demonstrations and group discussion, as well as individual work time and one-on-one time with the instructor will fill out each day. The discussion and review at the end of each day is a critical part of the learning process, so attendance is expected from 10 am to 4 pm. This workshop will be a great opportunity for you to add to your creative toolbox.

As always, the equipment and most materials are provided. You will be asked to email ahead of the workshop one image that will be printed and glued to a panel ahead of time for you to use on Friday; then bring with you 4 or 5 additional photos or images to use in class. More details will be provided in a separate email in advance of the workshop.
